Building games with LLMs to help my kid learn math
I used ChatGPT to help my kid learn Left from Right, and now I'm turning LLMs into math teachers.
I made this game to help him understand the magnitude of numbers between 0 and 20:
Then I made the following game with Claude and its Claude Artifacts feature and it is far superior than frequently copy/pasting from other LLMs (like I did above). I'll have to compare it to the new OpenAI Canvas at some point, but Anthropic's tool is pretty sweet.
Last but not least, I made the following with Claude Artifacts again. I uploaded a PDF worksheet from class, made a dozen or so revisions, and kicked this out 29 minutes after getting the teacher's newsletter.
It ain't exactly A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, but I'm making these with love. I literally open up this exact web page you're reading, sit down with him, and we'll practice.Â
But that doesn't look like math?
These math building blocks are based on the school's Singapore Math curriculum. Why does my kid's school teach math from Singapore? Because their math scores are better, that's why!
At least initially, kids learn how numbers from 0-20 "fit together" to prepare them to easily tackle addition and subtraction later. The "ten-frames" and "number bonds" show how numbers are just made up of smaller numbers. My kid's got at least five more years of Singapore Math assignments, so feel free to subscribe to my newsletter if you want to follow along as I make these!Â
